I’ve had several great writing classes and telecommunications courses at IU, but I wanted to see the industry and how everything worked behind the scenes first-hand.
Through the Indiana University Parents Fund, I was awarded a housing grant for my summer internship with Gulfstream Pictures on the Warner Brothers lot in Los Angeles. These funds helped cover my rent and utility expenses while I was in California and were critical in my ability to participate in the internship.
When I first arrived for my summer internship, I couldn’t help but smile to see all of the actors, star wagons and movie sets. I immediately was put to work. My internship tasks included going on coffee runs, picking up lunch, reading scripts while writing coverage, sitting in on pitch meetings, and doing research for show ideas. Going on coffee runs and picking up lunch doesn’t sound ideal, but it taught me the importance of working hard, maintaining a positive attitude, and the reality of working my way up. I realized that the majority of successful people in the entertainment industry started as interns for companies just as I did, which made me very appreciative for my internship. Also, by running errands around the Warner Brothers lot, I met a lot of important people and made great connections.
Working hands-on with a well-known film production company also strengthened my love and knowledge for my craft. I really enjoyed reading different genres of scripts and providing my personal thoughts. Reading and writing projects strengthened my writing skills and allowed me to learn what kind of characters or story lines in scripts intrigue me the most as a developing writer. Sitting in on pitch meetings gave me insight on what producers and agents are looking for, as well as how to properly and successfully deliver a script.
Not only did I get to see people pitch ideas to Gulfstream, I got to help set up the animation boards when our company pitched an animation idea to Dream Works. Being able to see the Warner Brothers lot and Dream Works is something I never imagined I would experience, so to say I am grateful is an understatement.
There are no words to justify how incredible my internship was. Gulfstream Pictures has given me new perspectives and knowledge that I’ll never forget. I’m now confident that I will take the proper steps I need to be the successful entertainer I have always dreamed of becoming.
